CMHLP (Centre for Mental Health, Law and Policy)
The Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy (CMHLP) addresses systemic mental health and suicide prevention challenges, targeting underserved populations through implementation research, capacity building, and policy reform to create inclusive and sustainable mental health ecosystems in India.
Since 2007, CMHLP has worked across India to co-develop, implement, and evaluate rights-based mental health and suicide prevention solutions. Based in Pune, it partners with governments, communities, and youth to drive policy change, build capacity, and generate evidence. CMHLP has contributed to landmark reforms like India’s Mental Healthcare Act (2017), led and scaled WHO-recognised interventions like Atmiyata, developed mental health strategies and implementation pathways for state governments (e.g. Sikkim), and supported countries in the Global South through an ongoing partnership with PAHO (Pan American Health Organization), transforming care ecosystems through sustainable, community-led models at a national level and globally.
The Harish and Bina Shah Foundation grant is being used to power a paradigm shift for us as sectoral leaders, both internally within the organization, and externally within the sector, in dialogue with relevant stakeholders and across new frontiers of work within mental health and suicide prevention.
