ISEG (Institute for Sustainability, Employment & Growth Foundation)
As part of India’s long-term aim of becoming a developed country, several studies underscore the importance of creating 90 million jobs and sustaining 8-8.5% annual GDP growth over the next decade for sustainable and inclusive growth. Further, with 75% of its 2050 infrastructure yet to be built, India has the opportunity to ‘build right’ by embedding sustainability and decarbonisation into urban growth and industrial development.
The Institute for Sustainability, Employment and Growth (ISEG) Foundation was incorporated in 2023 to drive large-scale impact for India’s sustainable and inclusive growth. ISEG Foundation is an “action-tank” in addition to a think-tank, with the overall objectives of creating 10 million jobs and supporting 10 Indian states in their energy transition journeys.
ISEG has partnered with NITI Aayog on their Growth Hub initiative to develop cities as engines of economic and employment growth. ISEG is working on the Economic Masterplans for Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) (currently in implementation), Varanasi, Visakhapatnam and Pune Economic Region.
ISEG is also the knowledge and strategic partner for the “ASSET” platform anchored by NITI Aayog, along with the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), which has been set up to facilitate energy transition of 8-10 states in India.
The grant from the Harish and Bina Shah Foundation is supporting ISEG’s work on ‘Economic Master-Planning of City-Regions’, for blueprinting and implementation. The blueprint covers as-is diagnostics for the region, vision & aspiration, identification of key growth drivers, land, investments and institutional requirements. The implementation work involves setting up the Programme Management Office for the respective state government to track and facilitate implementation of the city-region masterplan.
