Saturday Art Class
Saturday Art Class addresses the lack of holistic education in India’s under-resourced schools, targeting marginalised children. Through visual arts and social-emotional learning, we nurture creativity and crucial 21st-century skills, ensuring children are not left disengaged or unprepared for their futures.
Saturday Art Class started as a pilot project in a Mumbai government school in 2016 to provide children with access to weekly art classes and create a safe space for expression. It has since grown to work across 14 states, partnering with non-profit organizations and governments. To date, we have reached over 185,000 children and trained more than 6,700 educators. A third-party evaluation found that sustained access to visual arts and social-emotional learning meaningfully builds students' imagination, perseverance, communication, and critical thinking.
The Harish and Bina Shah Foundation grant will strengthen Saturday Art Class’s impact in art-based SEL (social and emotional learning) education by supporting two programmes: Art for educators, training government school teachers, and art labs, engaging directly with students. The grant covers programme and personnel costs, including teacher training, curriculum design, and team capacity building.
