The Marg Foundation

The Marg Foundation
The Marg Foundation’s primary goal is the documentation and promotion of Indian art and culture. Our audience includes undergraduate students, researchers, teachers, and interested readers globally.  The foundation aims to publish peer-reviewed research to ensure access to reliable information about Indian culture.

The Marg Foundation publishes Marg, India’s oldest art magazine, founded in 1946 by Mulk Raj Anand. Based in Mumbai, the foundation has published over 300 magazine issues and 200 books on Indian and South Asian art. It holds regular free lectures in multiple cities on our recent volumes, and participates in literature and art festivals to inform audiences about South Asian culture. Since 2018, the entire magazine archive has been available in a digital format on the website. Our books and magazines are heavily cited and are used in graduate curricula worldwide.

The Harish and Bina Shah Foundation grant is a long-term, unrestricted grant with a focus on strengthening Marg as an institution and furthering its organizational development capacities. The grant is used for the publication of peer-reviewed books and magazines, while expanding educational outreach and curriculum building activities. As part of the grant, Marg is also redeveloping its website, on which most of its archive will have open access.
