India’s healthcare system is overstretched, and healthcare workers are overburdened due to staff shortages, which means they do not get enough time to engage effectively with patients and families. The Care Companion Programme by YosAid bridges this gap by promoting impactful healthcare practices and actionable skill-building for patients and their families to improve health outcomes and strengthen health systems.

YosAid has implemented the Care Companion Program (CCP) in public hospitals across India through state government partnerships. YosAid trains hospital staff who in turn train patients and caregivers to follow standardised and necessary healthcare practices. The programme focuses on behaviour-change communication using tools like flipcharts, videos, and mobile messaging support. Presently, the CCP is active in 11,500+ hospitals across 8 states of India, reaching over 29 million patients and caregivers, improving outcomes, including reducing neonatal mortality, newborn readmissions, and post-surgical cardiac complications.

The Harish and Bina Shah Foundation grant supports YosAid Innovation Foundation in implementing the Care Companion Programme across Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. While in Maharashtra, the grant supports the facility model in 120 government hospitals for maternal and newborn health, non-communicable diseases, and cardiology component, in Andhra Pradesh, it extends support for the implementation of primary care model across 10,000 health and wellness centres by training  the medical officers, and community health officers.
